Compensation


First-Year Base Salary..... US$ 160,000
Second-Year Base Salary..... US$ 170,000
Clerkship Bonus (for One Year)..... US$ 50,000
Clerkship Bonus (for Two Years)..... US$ 70,000

We have recently established a Senior Associate Supplemental Compensation Plan designed to provide our senior associates each year with incremental compensation (that is, in addition to base salary and year-end bonus) that will be set in line with the Firm’s overall financial performance and activity levels.  The Plan is designed to recognize the critical contribution to our success made by our senior associates by enabling them to benefit more directly from that success.

Benefits

The insurance and related benefits described here pertain to lawyers in our U.S. offices. The benefits for other offices, while similar, vary by country.

  • Moving Assistance
    • Within the first six months of employment, the Firm will reimburse associates up to US$ 3,500 of broker’s fees or closing costs. Reasonable moving expenses to the city to which an associate has been assigned are also reimbursed.
    • The Firm will provide access to loans of up to US$ 100,000 to assist with housing down payments.
  • Medical and Dental Plans
    Two medical (one non-contributory) and a dental plan effective on the first day of employment for lawyer and eligible dependents.

  • Group Life Insurance
    Firm-paid coverage of three times base salary. May obtain additional and dependent coverage.

  • Long-Term Disability
    Firm-paid insurance. Coverage is 50% of base earnings subject to a maximum.

  • Business Travel Insurance
    Coverage up to US$ 1 million, includes medical evacuation and/or repatriation.

  • Support for Lawyers with Non-U.S. Passports
    S&C offers financial support to lawyers in connection with business travel with non-U.S. passports for obtaining a U.S. visa stamp at a U.S. consulate abroad and in certain other situations. The Firm also provides assistance to its lawyers in the United States who do not have U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent resident status, including access, at the Firm’s expense within established limits, to immigration counsel in connection with obtaining family-based lawful permanent residence.   • Pre-Tax Benefits
    • Health and Dependent Care Reimbursement Plans:
      set aside pre-tax dollars for eligible expenses.
    • Transportation Fringe Benefits:
      set aside pre-tax dollars for Transit/MetroCheks and work-related parking.
  • Associates’ Savings Plan
    Contribute pre- and post-tax dollars to 401k plan.

  • Voluntary Post-Tax Benefits
    • Personal Accident Insurance up to US$ 1 million per lawyer.
      Dependent coverage subject to limitations.
    • Supplemental Long Term Disability: a portable individual policy.
  • Family Benefits
    S&C recognizes the importance of family and is a leader among its peers in the family benefits it provides to its lawyers.
    • Flex-Time Policy
      Since 1987, S&C has allowed lawyers to work less than full time under a variety of tailored flex-time schedules. Currently, there are 20 men and women lawyers at the Firm who are working on a flex-time schedule.
    • Same-Sex Domestic Partners Benefits
      Same-sex domestic partners of lawyers at the Firm receive the same full coverage as spouses enjoy under the Firm's benefits plans.
    • Leave in Connection with the Birth or Adoption of a Child
      S&C grants maternity and adoption leave, totaling eighteen weeks with full salary, to lawyers who are primary caregivers of a child. As described below in detail, the available paid leave has several components, including a child care leave that is available to other lawyers as well.
      • Maternity Leave — An eight-week maternity disability leave with full salary is granted to women lawyers, in connection with the birth of a child. (If the disability from pregnancy extends beyond eight weeks, additional disability leave is available.) This leave is in addition to available paid Child Care and Primary Caregiver Leaves, described below.
      • Adoption Leave — An eight-week leave of absence with full salary is granted, at the time of adoption, to lawyers who are primary caregivers of an adopted child. This leave is in addition to available paid Child Care and Primary Caregiver Leaves, described below.
      • Primary Caregiver Leave — A six-week leave of absence with full salary is granted to lawyers who are primary caregivers, in connection with the birth or adoption of a child.
      • Child Care Leave — A four-week leave of absence with full salary is granted to all lawyers, in connection with the birth or adoption of a child.

A primary caregiver of a child can also take additional unpaid leave for a total leave, including applicable categories of leave described above, of up to six months.

  • On-Site Backup Child Care Center
    The Firm is a founding member of an on-site backup child care center at the New York office. The center is operated by Bright Horizons and is available to S&C parents for emergency child care.

  • Infant Transition Program
    For a period of generally up to three months, a parent in the New York office may use the on-site child care center every work day for the care of an infant, aged three to twelve months. This program is intended to ease the process of separation, for both the parent and child, and to facilitate a more comfortable transition back to work for the parent.

  • Child Care Assistance Program
    Administered by an independent consulting firm, this Program offers information and referrals regarding child care options to assist lawyers in selecting a child care provider.

  • Adult Care Assistance Program
    Administered by an independent consulting firm, this Program assists lawyers who are dealing with the many issues that arise when caring for older relatives, such as identifying housing and in-home care options.

  • Adoption Assistance Plan
    Lawyers who have completed one year of service may be eligible for the Adoption Assistance Plan, which provides up to US$ 7,500 of reimbursed expenses related to the adoption of a child under age 18.

  • Additional Benefits
